Knowing that I would like to start focusing on ceramics (mainly porcelain) I went to see ‘Ceramic Art London’ back in June 2022. I wanted to re-visit the images I took for some inspiration and direction.<\/p>\n

I really like the more abstract forms rather than traditional\/accurately proportioned pieces. I remember being drawn to one artist in particular, Margaret Curtis – who uses black clay and a white shino glaze for her pieces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\"\" \"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This has made me question whether porcelain is actually the right clay to choose for my project…\u00a0As earthenware\/stoneware has a more organic look to to it. I’ve also never considered making glazes before, which is something I’m now planning to delve into.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So upon reflection and getting my fired piece back I realised that even though my design had a natural-feel to it, the tendrils are very precise and fairly symmetrical… (Again concept-based.) Whereas I’d like to achieve a more rugged, asymmetrical, subtle effect like the pieces by Margaret Curtis – letting the materials speak for themselves.<\/p>\n

In the studio I did some painting on cotton rag paper, taking inspiration from the colour\/shape\/form of the ceramics from the fair images.<\/p>\n

\"\"Though only experimentation, I felt like there was something missing from the painting… So decided to play with it’s layout\/placement amongst other materials I had in case the layers added a bit more substance\/dimension. the effect was interesting and made it seem like an artefact, or historic parchment?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
